History

ASM began on 11 October 1911 as the Association Sportive Michelin, set up under Marcel Michelin to give the staff of the Michelin factory a sport; the same year he built the ground that now bears his name. A 1922 law against company names made it AS Montferrandaise, and since 1925 it has never left the top division. For decades the great runner-up — twelve lost French finals between 1936 and 2019 — it won the Challenge Yves du Manoir three times. Renamed ASM Clermont Auvergne in 2004, it reached four finals in a row under Vern Cotter and won its first French title in 2010, then a second in 2017, against Toulon. It has won the European Challenge Cup three times (1999, 2007, 2019) and lost three European Cup finals (2013, 2015, 2017).
