  • Jean-Marie Burlet — Promoted rugby across the province of Liège for 27 years

History

Founded in 1958, RFC Liégeois is the oldest rugby club in Wallonia. For 27 years Jean-Marie Burlet, working with his brothers in the Brussels region, promoted the game across the province, and by the club's own account it gave rise to every other Liège club: former members founded the Bonnet (later Standard), Red Blue Tilff (later ARAL and today XV Seraing) and, with ARAL players, RC Visé, and helped RC Condroz and RC Malmedy get started. Its colours are blood red and navy, 'Sang & Marine'. Its giant Xhovémont, 4.20 m tall, was built for the 50th anniversary in 2008 and has been a fixture of Liège folklore since its first outing in the 15 August parade in Outremeuse; the bull mascot Li Torè is a nod to Léon Mignon's 'Bull Tamer' statue.
