History

Kituro was founded in 1961 on the initiative of Teddy Lacroix and the former France international André Chilo; the volcanologist Haroun Tazieff, a rugby player in his spare time, named it after the Kituro, a volcano he had seen rumbling in the Virunga mountains a few years earlier. The club lost its first pitches at the Quai des Usines in Brussels in 1968 and joined the Air Force sports circle (Avia) in Evere, swapping its all-black kit for sky blue and becoming the 'Aviateurs' of the Kituro Avia Rugby Club. Since 1992 it has played at the Plaine Wahis in Schaerbeek, where members helped build the clubhouse and two rugby pitches (artificial since 2010) and black returned to the shirts alongside Schaerbeek's green. Kituro has been Belgian champion five times (1967, 1996, 2009, 2011, 2015) and won six Belgian Cups.
