The Heartland Championship is New Zealand's top non-professional provincial competition, played every year since 2006 by 12 unions based largely in towns and rural areas, from Buller and West Coast to Poverty Bay and North Otago. The season runs from August to October: after the round-robin stage the top four play for the Meads Cup and the next four for the Lochore Cup, named after Sir Colin Meads and Sir Brian Lochore. Heartland sides can also challenge for the Ranfurly Shield. 12 teams take part in the 2026 season.
